Specialty Finishes

Specialty Finishes. Timeless Beauty.

Some rooms deserve more than a single flat color. Limewash and textured plaster build depth into the surface itself, so the wall shifts character as the light moves across it through the day.

Finishes We Offer

Limewash

A mineral finish that sinks into the surface rather than sitting on top of it. Soft, cloudy movement that looks old world and ages gracefully.

Textured Plaster

Built up in layers and worked by hand. Gives a wall genuine relief and shadow instead of a printed on effect.

Accent & Feature Walls

One wall that carries a room. Entryways, powder rooms, fireplace surrounds and the spaces people notice first.

Mixed And Applied By Hand

Every finish is mixed and applied on site, by hand. No two walls come out quite the same, and that is the point. This is the opposite of a roller and a flat color, and it takes a different kind of patience.

  • A sample board or test area first, so you see the movement before we commit the wall
  • Walls prepared properly, because texture shows every flaw underneath it
  • Layers built up and worked while wet, which is why it cannot be rushed
  • Depth and movement varied to suit the room and the light it gets
  • Sealed where the room needs it, such as bathrooms and high traffic walls

Common Questions

What exactly is limewash?

A mineral based finish made from lime. It soaks into the surface rather than forming a film on top, which is what gives it that soft, cloudy depth. It has been used for centuries and it ages rather than peels.

Can you put it on a whole room or just one wall?

Either. A single feature wall is the most common request, but a whole room in limewash is beautiful in the right space, particularly bedrooms and entryways.

Will you show us a sample first?

Always. These finishes have movement, and no photo tells you what it will look like on your wall. We do a sample area so you can see it in your own light before we commit the room.

Does it work in a bathroom?

Yes, and it is one of our favourite places for it. Bathrooms need the right sealing to handle the moisture, and we will specify that as part of the job.

How long does a specialty finish take?

Longer than standard painting. The layers have to be worked while they are wet and then given time between coats. A feature wall is usually a couple of days including prep.

Does it cost more than regular painting?

Yes. It is hand applied, it takes longer, and the materials cost more. For a single wall the difference is usually modest for the effect you get.

Can it go over existing painted walls?

Usually, with the right preparation. The surface has to be sound and properly primed for the finish to take evenly. Texture is unforgiving of what is underneath, so the prep matters even more than usual.

How do we clean it?

Gently. These are not scrub surfaces. In rooms that need to be wipeable we seal accordingly, and we will tell you up front what the finish will and will not tolerate.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in East Grand Rapids and work across the surrounding neighborhoods. If you are nearby and not sure whether you are in range, call and ask.
